BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month: Resource Roundup

Santa Clara County is one of the most diverse communities in the United States. It’s a place where over 100 languages are spoken, and no single racial or ethnic group forms a majority.

Momentum for Health is one of Santa Clara County’s largest nonprofit providers of behavioral health care. We treat over 4,500 individuals each year with comprehensive, accessible, and culturally responsive mental health care and addiction treatment for clients from all different backgrounds and walks of life.

We know that mental health challenges and treatment approaches are not one-size-fits-all. All BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) communities and individuals have their own unique experiences of navigating mental health. In honor of July as BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, we are sharing resources specifically focused on supporting BIPOC individuals with their mental wellness.

Immediate Support

  • In a crisis and need help now?
First and foremost, if you need immediate support, know that you are never alone. Help is always available. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, 24/7, and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Call or text 988 to be connected with a trained crisis counselor. If you’d rather text, you can also receive immediate text support at the Crisis Text Line by texting “HOME” to 741-741 to connect with a Crisis Counselor for free 24/7.

  • Struggling to meet physical needs?
The 211 Helpline, run by the United Way, can connect you with information about local resources and services. The helpline is free and available 24/7. For help finding food, paying for housing or bills, accessing childcare, or meeting other essential needs, call 211 to speak to someone who can help, or check out this Santa Clara County Social Services Agency resource guide

  • Find a Therapist Who Offers Care Specific to Your Identity
    • The La Selva Community Clinic, part of the La Selva Group (a division of Momentum for Health) offers a full spectrum of mental health services for English and Spanish speaking adults. These services include, but are not limited to psychiatry, case management, counseling, a day program, and discount medication support. Services are provided free of charge and are offered in person and via telehealth.
    • BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective) is a widely respected organization offering community education, advocacy, and a Black Virtual Wellness Directory.
    • The Asian Mental Health Collective highlights resources including a comprehensive therapist directory, therapy fund support, and community support groups.
    • Therapy for Latinx works to address stigma around therapy and offers a robust directory of therapists who will offer care specifically for your unique identity.
    • Inclusive Therapists provides a directory or directly matches people with therapists who understand their unique background. The idea is to make the process of searching for a therapist less daunting, especially for individuals from BIPOC communities.
