Happy Mothers Day

To My Children2Being a mother can be a huge challenge and delicate juggling act no matter who you are. For mothers coping with a mental illness this challenge can be amplified.

There are times when functioning will be compromised when living with that mental illness. Yet it is important to understand that this doesn’t mean that a healthy family is out of reach. Knowing more about the illness, its triggers and cycles will help to navigate life’s daily schedule and activity.

One significant barrier to receiving support is stigma because our society has a tendency to hold negative beliefs and attitudes about mental illness. In addition, stigma also increases the pressure on parents to be the perfect caregiver. Learning to live with a mental illness can be key. It is not about fixing fancy meals each night or having a spotless home but letting your kids know you love them and facing illness with courage says a lot more about what kind of mother you truly are.

Read this story to meet a mother a who has dealt with anxiety for as long as she can remember. As exhausting as it can be at times to live with a mental illness this mother finds hope through the smiles, hugs and optimism of her children.

To this mother and all the mothers who may be coping with a mental illness please know that you are not alone. Your hope, courage and love inspires us ALL, each and every day.

We wish you a happy, happy Mother’s Day!

Many thanks and much appreciation to the San Jose Water Company for sponsoring this day of rebuilding! We further thank ALL the wonderful volunteers for contributing their time and expertise.

These individuals came together on Saturday, April 23rd to improve conditions at a resident’s home located in San Jose. Momentum’s President and CEO, David K. Mineta along with Property Manager, Mary Angel were designated paint duties right beside other volunteers.

Exterior painting, landscape planting and improvements to the asphalt driveway were just a few of the project tasks completed. At the end of the day, the home beautifully reflected the care and love that many volunteers generously expended on it.

Story of Recovery

At just 14-years-old, Audrey was taken to Emergency Psychiatric Services (EPS) when her school’s therapist noticed cut marks on her arms, a response to being sexually abused two years prior. The next nine years were rough; between Audrey’s mother’s belief that her daughter was not in need of mental health treatment and getting heavily involved in addictive stimulants, Audrey’s life took a turn for the worse. “When I was 16, I thought I was hearing God,” she said. “Once I started doing drugs, that’s when I started seeing things and hearing things that weren’t there. Drugs definitely induced [my symptoms of schizophrenia].” Around the age of 23, Audrey became fed up with the way her life was going. After doing some research about various programs in the area and trying out their services, Audrey felt fortunate that Momentum’s Youth and Family Services program was able to provide her with the help and resources she needed.  Read more
